Cain Says He’d Be A Better Nominee Than Romney

Former presidential candidate and pizza magnate Herman Cain is the latest Republican to trash Mitt Romney’s campaign.

Cain told a 300-person crowd at the University of Florida that if he were the Republican nominee, he — unlike Romney — would have a “substantial lead” over President Obama.

“The reason is quite simple,” Cain explained. “I have some depth to my ideas.”

It’s unclear to which ideas Cain was referring. His most famous idea, the “9-9-9” tax reform plan, was regularly criticized as unrealistic (and may have been stolen from a video game).

Similarly, “depth” is not the first term that leaps to mind when considering Cain’s foreign policy ideas.

Cain later told the Gainesville crowd that “stupid people are ruining America, and we’ve got to take it back,” before closing his speech by singing the song “Believe in Yourself” from the movie “The Wiz.”

Cain is one of many Republicans to publicly turn on Romney during this rough stretch in his campaign. Several prominent Republicans have criticized Romney’s secretly recorded remarks denigrating 47 percent of the country at a private fundraiser, and on Thursday Republican Senate candidate Tommy Thompson went so far as to blame Romney for his own recent dip in the polls.
